TMA UK Regional Conference - event summary

Posted: 25 Jun, 2019

Another success for TMA UK

On 19 June 2019 the TMA UK launched its inaugural regional conference being held in Leeds at Aspire. The initiative and drive to do this was run by the regions and led by the conference chair Rashmi Dubé. The hard work of the Conference Committee meant that, combined with the delegates from the Network of Women opening event, we saw over 100 delegates register! This clearly shows the need, and appreciation, for a regional conference.

The speakers presented the theme of "Resilience during Change”

The day opened with a precursor to the main event with the Network of Women (NOW). Sara Bird - CEO and Founder of SqWears Couture, Kate Rosie - Deloitte and Richelle Schuster - Grant Thornton talked about resilience during their careers and what it meant to them on both a professional and personal level. It was lovely to be involved in such a frank and open discussion, chaired by Victoria Crutchley, Director of FRP Advisory

The main conference started after lunch with the keynote speaker Natalie Sykes - Regional Director of the IOD. Natalie discussed the story of entrepreneurial success, the changes that businesses face and the fact that, in terms of the IOD, resilience comes in many forms. The main point being does adversity make you stronger or simply change you? No matter what, resilience was the key to any success through change.

Natalie was followed by Matthew Jubb - Partner at Endless who provided an insightful case study on turnaround. Turnaround and change could not just be down to cashflow: it was fixing and, more importantly, transforming the way in which a business and stakeholders adapt and show resilience.

Matthew was followed by a panel discussion “change is on the horizon” with Tracey Dawson - Daletech Electronics, Tim Mercer - Vapour MediaDeborah Mills - Independent Brand and Communications Consultant and Tony Webster - Wayfinder who all discussed adversity, and the need for individuals to change and adapt to face future changes resiliently. Each party had their unique message and story of resilience and gave the audience powerful tools to take home.

After the coffee break the NextGen panel, made up of Nick Hammond - Colliers, Nick Hutton - Leslie Keats, Rebekah Ingham - KPMG and David Isaacs - Endless LLP, treated delegates to an interactive section using Slido to measure which sectors the audience feel were going to face the biggest challenges in the next 12 months, with most of the audience believing it would be the retail and leisure sectors and the panel believing it would be the construction industry. They saw resilience as being something fluid and ongoing and adversity as always just around the corner. Learning to adapt and change are a crucial part of resilience.

We were, of course, delighted to welcome Peter Stevens, the TMA UK President, on stage to talk about the TMA, its Global connections and announce this years’ Annual UK Conference.

After Peter we had the exceptional motivational speaker Jimmy Gittins. Jimmy is an ex rugby league player who suffered a horrific injury in 2002, breaking his neck in two places, which confined him to a wheelchair. James talked about changes and resilience to adversity that he experienced throughout his life. His powerful message was that, when presented with adversity and change, both individuals and businesses can be resilient.

The event closed with the announcement of the next regional conference taking place next year in Birmingham. The delegates stayed for the champagne reception, which provided an opportunity to network and do business with like-minded people.

In summary it was an action-packed day full of different speakers that not only inspired and educated the delegates but also provided practical advice on how to be resilient during change.

A huge thank you to those who contributed and sponsored the event, to our speakers and our delegates. To the conference committee, David Brindley, Tyrone Courtman, Victoria Crutchley, James Fuller-Thompson who made my job much easier and of course to Nyree Magill and Kelly Darlaston who ensured everything ran smoothly; and without whom this conference would not have been possible. Thank you.
