Brigadier Stenhouse commissioned into 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards (QDG) in 1998. His early operational experience included deployments to Kosovo, Bosnia, both as a Troop Leader, to Iraq twice and to Afghanistan.
At staff he has held appointments on the Current Operations desk for Afghanistan in the Permanent Joint Headquarters, been an Instructor on the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) and on promotion to Lieutenant Colonel was selected for the Advanced Command and Staff Course (ACSC). As an SO1 he was the Lead Programmer in Headquarters Field Army.
He then Commanded his own Regiment, the QDG from 2017 to 2019. Promotion to Colonel followed, where he was Assistant Head Capability Plans in Army Headquarters with responsibility for managing the Army’s Equipment Programme and also attended the Higher Command and Staff Course.
Promoted to Brigadier in May 22 he assumed command of the 11th Security Force Assistance Brigade and immediately was given responsibility for leading the delivery of Operation INTERLEX, the training of Ukrainian soldiers at scale in the United Kingdom where his efforts were recognised by promotion to Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
He has been Head of Capability Plans in the Force Development organisation within the Military Strategic Headquarters in the Ministry of Defence since June 2024.
