The Body Shop: an account from the front line event write up

17 February, 2025
Panel Jones Day

Feb 12th 2025. TMA UK held a fascinating event on the Body Shop administration – less than a year since the process was declared. With well over 100 people in attendance, it was clear that the TMA had managed to capture the interest of a sizeable segment of the London based restructuring market.

Hosted at the offices of Jones Day in London the panel was expertly chaired by Rebecca Walker, Restructuring and Insolvency Partner at Lester Aldridge LLP and TMA UK board director. The panel comprised Steve Baluchi and Tony Sturge from FRP and David Harding of Jones Day - three professionals who were involved from the start in a process which took over their respective lives!

Ultimately, the problems of an overcomplicated corporate structure, lack of clarity on some fairly key operational considerations and a swiftly deteriorating cash flow position are not an uncommon scenario in an insolvency. But add to the mix a truly cross global group with operations in 84 countries, a unique corporate culture and the hemorrhaging of senior staff whilst all the while having to be cognisant that the Administration was being played out in the full glare of national and international publicity added untold layers of complexity to proceedings.

The need for experienced advisors with local knowledge in each jurisdiction once again came through as key and the attention paid to cultural sensitivities, (which at one point even dictated the design of Steve’s shirt!) was fascinating and all served to reinforce the amount of thought and effort that the team put in over many months to secure a sale and maximise the outcome for the creditors.

War stories such as these are valuable for the restructuring community, particularly when the lessons seem so fresh and are brought to life in the way the panel managed to do in this entertaining and informative session.

Next month, the TMA will be at the London Business School for a panel including Steve Norris, the Chairman of Soho estates and chaired by Tony Groom of K2 Partners. There will no doubt be more well-informed insights into the world of corporate restructuring – we’ll see you there!
